Mass stranding, Senegal, 21 May 2008

A mass stranding of short-finned pilot whales occurred on Tuesday 21 May, at the plage de Yoff Tonghor, Dakar. 34 animals died; 27 females & 7 males. 3 were taken for necropsy at l'Ecole Veterinaire de Dakar. The remaining carcasses were buried. WWF Senegal organised 6 pirogues and a team of volunteers, to assist with the re-floating of over 60 other whales. Measurements were made on a number of dead animals, and photo-documentation was also collected.

Pilot whales are so cool! I hate it that they always strand in large numbers.

I see that you are a marine biologist. I also see that you like cetacean conservation. If you're interested, you can visit my blog (theyneedavoice.blogspot.com). I talk all about the conservation and threats to cetaceans.
